OUR CAUSES
What Make us different
You can make a difference in the lives of our neighbors by getting involved with Vine Street Community Center. Whether you volunteer your time, donate to support our programs, or spread the word about our work, your contribution can help us create a stronger, more resilient community for all.
Emergency Assistance
The aim of the Emergency Assistance program is to increase community residents’ access to much needed resources. Our goal is to make emergency rent and utility
assistance available to eligible residents, with a focus on the surrounding underserved, high poverty zip codes of 19131, 19139, 19143, and 19151. Through these two programs, we will be able to provide the supports needed to achieve and maintain housing stability, a basic need that is foundational to the pursuit of community and economic development.
This program will help community residents with making rent payments and/or security deposits in order to help them either move to permanent housing or prevent their imminent eviction from permanent housing.
Job Skills Initiative and College Preparatory Program
With this program we aim to help address barriers to employment through access to an Employment Counsellor, computer training and access, and referrals to other social services and resources, such as job leads. We want to ensure that community residents have the educational attainment and employment experience needed to become highly skilled workers, contributing taxpayers, and successful participants in civic life.
We believe that college education is the pathway to becoming self sufficient and economically empowered. Our goal will be to partner with local colleges, universities, and training programs to provide community residents with the information and resources needed to apply to college, training programs, and other post secondary programs that will allow for the earning of some credential that will increase their income earning potential.
We will exist in a city of 1.5 million people, and only 26% of the city’s residents have college degrees. Our goal is to not only increase enrolment in college amongst the young people in our footprint, but to increase the number of those individuals who obtain a degree. We will do this by hosting various college preparatory events including but not limited to; SAT prep, financial aid workshops, college visits, etc.
Free Income Tax Preparation
For many of the families in the area we aim to serve accessing the right resources during tax season is critical in obtaining a full tax refund. Our goal is to ensure that eligible residence are able to take advantage of valuable tax credits and refunds that go a long way in a family’s annual budget.
We will work with volunteers to assist community residents in getting the tax returns completed free of charge, and ensure that they are able to access valuable credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Our goal is to decrease the utilization of commercial tax preparation services. The money saved from utilizing a free service can go a long way in savings for low-income families.
Financial education and asset building
In a city where more than one in four people live below the poverty line, it is crucial that we make reliable financial advice easy to access. We will have an onsite financial counselor who provides free one-on-one financial counseling to help clients manage debt and access much needed services (i.e., foreclosure prevention). This counselor will also facilitate financial workshops for community members. Our goal is to help residents establish healthy financial habits by helping them to identify specific debt and budgeting issues and takes steps to establish or improve their credit.
Summer Reading Program Initiative
The goal of the Summer Reading Program is to support youth in their development of their reading abilities with age appropriate reading activities. The focus will be on children aged 5-12. Volunteer reading coaches will work with youth to help them track their progress on a reading log. All youth participants will be responsible for reading a minimum of 12 hours for the entire summer.
We will work with local libraries and business to help support and promote this program. Libraries can promote this program by posting information about the program in the libraries, at their events, and on their websites. Local business can help support this program by also promoting it, and providing prizes for those youth who reach their reading goals.
Pro Bono Counseling for Youth
Many of the youth in the community where we exist are often victims of and witness to many forms of trauma. Youth face many challenges in society that may have an impact on their development. In order for them to be productive members of society it is imperative that they have access to a counselor(s)that can help them develop attitudes and behaviors that help them function at optimal psycho-social levels. Our goal is to be able to provide youth access to a service that teaches them how to function in a non-supportive, hostile environment.
Volunteerism and Involvement
We will community residents the opportunity to volunteer, if they wish, in our activities so that they can build their skills, confidence, and capacity for advocacy, self-determination, and civic engagement. These activities include Town Hall Meetings, Advisory Committee meetings and any other hosted meetings that benefit the community.

Community Need
The need for services in the West Philadelphia area is significant. High poverty rates and rates of violence contribute to homelessness and economic insecurity. According to the American Community Survey (2009-2013), 28.3% of residents in our service area live below 100% of the poverty level, and 54.2% live below 200% of the poverty level. Unemployment rates in our service area are also higher than the citywide average.
Our Goals
Our goal is to operate a one-stop community center that addresses these needs by providing essential services and support, including:
- Enrollment in public benefits
- Access to utility assistance, rental assistance, and foreclosure diversion services
- Free income tax preparation
- Financial education
- Computer training and open lab access
